Director, Business Operations

SUMMARY
The Director of Business Operations leads the growth of the continuous improvement culture within BioMarin's Novato Manufacturing site. This role requires the ability to integrate technical, regulatory, and business opportunities to enable the site to efficiently meet its manufacturing goals in a cGMP compliant manner. The Director reports to the VP of Novato Operations and is a member of the Novato Site Leadership Team driving functional and cross-functional projects that embed continuous improvement principles across the Manufacturing organization. This involves working closely with Technical Operations Business Process Engineering, as well as leading the process of identifying, defining, and prioritizing initiatives, and managing the portfolio of improvement projects and training for the Manufacturing site. The Director effectively manages across projects in the portfolio to ensure alignment and consistency with global business strategy and tangible improvements for the organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director acts as a leader for Strategy Realization at the site level and is responsible for managing Operational Excellence, Training, Continuous Improvement, and Performance Measurement across the Novato manufacturing site.
Identifies opportunities to improve quality, reduce cycle time, reduce COGs, and increase operational efficiency. Directs project prioritization and selection to maximize business and financial impact. Leads the planning and execution of high-impact site improvement projects and strategic initiatives. Works with leaders to establish continuous improvement goals and act as a liaison with finance to build CI budgets and validating actual improvement results.
Improves capabilities of the organization by formulating long and short range planning objectives for site-wide training function. Seeks ways to continuously improve the Compliance, Technical, Process Excellence, Leadership, Enrichment, and New Hire Orientation training curriculum. Interfaces with support functions to secure services and resources.
Identifies, prepares, and facilitates events and workshops to drive the identification and execution of process improvement initiatives. Works alongside project managers from across the organization to drive additional process or capital initiatives that stem from the initial process improvement workshops.
Establishes efficient processes and systems to track and report status of initiatives including resources, projects, savings, etc. Creates and maintains operational and financial metrics dashboards and reports that accurately measure site performance.
Establishes communication channels for sharing continuous improvement initiatives within Global Manufacturing network and ensures alignment between sites.
Accountable for strategic site business plan and participates as stakeholder in network long range strategic planning process.
Works closely with Business Process Integration (BPI) and Business Process Engineering (BPE) functions to ensure support and alignment with global processes.
Develops Business Operations department strategy and budget. Responsible for ensuring the quality and quantity of work produced, staffing requirements, and personnel management for the immediate team.
EDUCATION
Required Education:
Bachelor's degree in business management, information systems, engineering, math, science (e.g., biology, chemistry, pharmacy, medical), or related field.
Preferred Education:
Advanced degree in technical or business administration related field.
Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt certification
Project Management Institute (PMI) or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
EXPERIENCE
Required Experience and Abilities:
10
years of relevant operations experience
Proven 5 years in a leadership role with strong management skills and business acumen
Superior communication skills. Able to provide oral, written, and formal presentations to senior management, middle management and line staff.
Experience in successfully leading transformational change
Demonstrated ability to partner with other functional groups to achieve business objectives.
Ability to effectively lead cross-functional project teams. Escalates and drives resolution of project issues.
Strong attention to detail and creative problem solving skills
Ability to interpret and analyze statistical data and financial reports, understand and resolve technical challenges, interface with internal technical experts and external technical representatives, and manage multiple priorities in a manufacturing environment setting.
Preferred
Experience:
10 years project planning and management including successful implementation of highly complex business and technology initiatives.
4 years managing and influencing people
Experience in developing business strategies
SCOPE
The work product from the Director of Business Operations will directly support product revenue and other programs executed in the network, will be a major driver for Manufacturing efficiency, and will highly impact operational costs.
The Director of Business Operations is a senior leader and member of the Novato Site Leadership Team.
